Fruits and vegetables are vital components to a day to day healthy and nutritious diet. Their safety takes priority because when contaminated, they pose harmful effects when consumed. As such, emphasis is placed on engaging good agricultural practices that are applied from primary production and extending to secondary and tertiary processing, storage and distribution, and packaging. The production of safe food is essential for protecting consumers from the hazards
associated with the consumption of contaminated fruits and vegetables.

High levels of chemicals in fruits and vegetables cause several acute health risks including nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, inhibition of blood clotting, and paralysis of the respiratory and circulatory systems. In some cases, pesticides and chemicals used can cause birth defects and
neurological problems. One cannot over stress the fact that high levels of chemicals equally
affect the nutritional value resulting into low quality of product.

The environmental impact associated with the excessive use of pesticides /chemicals is profound. Over time, it will lead to soil pollution, contamination thereby resulting into environmental
degradation. It is worth noting that over a period of time, continuous over use of pesticides
results into development of resistant pests that will be uncontrollable in the future. Pests in fruits
and vegetables also causes scarring or discoloration, reduced shelf life and carry harmful bacteria and viruses such as salmonella when consumed.

Farmers in Uganda have adopted organic farming practices like animal manures, application of composted plant residues etc that are economically viable and have environmental benefits.
Nonetheless, whilst farmers continue to do the best they can, it is advisable that as consumers,
we partake in a) choose organically grown fruits and vegetables b) soaking the fruits or
vegetables in salt water using Himalayan salt or sea salt for 20 minutes or c) Use bicarbonate of
soda or baking soda to clean your fruits and vegetables or d) soak them water or vinegar for 20
minutes or so.
